CAS Foreign Member Tshilidzi Marwala Visits Chinese Academy of Sciences to Explore Future Collaboration

Professor Tshilidzi Marwala, President of the United Nations University (UNU) and a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), visited CAS in Beijing on February 25 to explore potential avenues for collaboration.
Prof. Dr. WU Zhaohui, Vice President of CAS, presented Prof. Marwala with his certificate of CAS Foreign Membership during his visit. Prof. WU highlighted that CAS adheres to openness and cooperation, actively integrates into the global scientific and technological innovation network, and is committed to addressing global challenges such as climate change, ecological protection, and life and health.
He expressed optimism for a fruitful partnership with UNU, focusing on critical issues including sustainable development and artificial intelligence, contributing together to the advancement of society.
Prof. Marwala praised CAS for its outstanding contributions to global scientific innovation. Calling his role as a CAS Foreign Member a great honor, he expressed his eagerness to strengthen collaboration between UNU and CAS, particularly in artificial intelligence and clean energy.
As a part of his visit, Prof. Marwala and his delegation also toured the Academic Divisions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASAD). Prof. Dr. WANG Dujin, Director General of the Bureau of CASAD, underscored the pivotal role of CAS Foreign Members in fostering international scientific and technological cooperation and exchange.
CASAD would continue to promote collaboration through platforms such as the General Assembly of CAS Members and the Yanqi Lake Meeting, fostering interdisciplinary, and cross-regional partnerships.
Prof. Marwala introduced the UNU Development Strategy 2025-2029, highlighting the university’s commitment to knowledge innovation, strategic alliances, and increasing global influence. He emphasized UNU’s dedication to international research collaboration and advocacy for policy development to tackle global challenges.
Before engaging in discussions, Prof. Marwala and his delegation visited an exhibition showcasing CAS’s scientific and technological achievements.
