The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) on January 22 announced the country’s and the world's top 10 sci-tech news in 2024 in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, east China.

The news were selected by the academicians of CAS and CAE, who hold the country's highest national academic titles in science and engineering.

CAS Vice President Prof. Dr. WU Zhaohui unveiled the list of China’s top 10 sci-tech achievements in 2024:

1. The Chang'e-6 lunar mission, which collected lunar samples from the far side of the moon for the first time

2. The world's first brain-inspired complementary visual chip based on primal language

3. The first domestically-built ocean drilling vessel, which is named Mengxiang or Dream in English, that was officially commissioned

4. The world's first petabyte-level ultra-high-capacity optical disc storage device

5. The Einstein Probe astronomical satellite, also known as the Tianguan satellite, which was successfully launched and has achieved a series of results

6. A new solution for helium-free ultra-low-temperature refrigeration

7. The world's first universal CAR-T therapy that uses donor-derived CAR-T cells to treat rheumatic and autoimmune diseases

8. The super microscope which can provide a panoramic view of large-scale cell interactions

9. The first successful observation of graviton modes in condensed matter in the world

10. The second Qinghai-Tibet Plateau scientific research expedition, drilled the world's longest mountain glacier core and achieved a series of breakthroughs

CAE Vice President Prof. Dr. WANG Chen announced the world's top 10 sci-tech achievements in 2024:

1. The 3D-printing of functional human brain tissue

2. Willow, Google's new quantum chip, which achieved an accuracy milestone

3. The Euclid Space Telescope, which captured the first image of the "cosmic atlas"

4. The largest brain gene regulatory network atlas

5. An ultra-precise 3D atlas of cancer cells

6. The first bilingual brain-reading device to enable aphasic individuals to "speak" again

7. The fifth test flight of SpaceX's Starship, which realized the successful recovery of its first-stage rocket.

8. The world's first stem cell therapy to restore human vision

9. The first live human transplant of a pig kidney

10. The successful trial of a long-acting HIV preventive injection

The year 2024's list is the 31st annual event of its kind. Following the widespread coverage of the event by the media, the public gained a better understanding of the advancements in science and technology both domestically and internationally. This event has positively contributed to the popularization of cutting-edge scientific knowledge.
