The 7th General Assembly

The 7th General Assembly of CAS Members and the Inauguration of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) were jointly held from June 3 to 8, 1994 in Beijing. State leaders Jiang Zemin, Li Peng, Qiao Shi, Li Ruihuan, Zhu Rongji, Liu Huaqing and Hu Jintao attended the conference and had a group photo taken with all CAS and CAE members present at the meeting. In his speech at the opening of the conference, Chinese President Jiang Zemin stated that Chinese science and technology had to see a new emancipation and a great development. Chinese Premier Li Peng also delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. Executive Chairman of the CAS Presidium and CAS President Zhou Guangzhao and Executive Chairman of the Presidium for the CAE inauguration Zhu Guangya made work reports at the meeting. Also present at the opening of the assembly were Vice Premier Zou Jiahua, Member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee Wen Jiabao, State Councilors Song Jian and Luo Gan, Vice Chairmen of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Qian Weichang and Qian Zhengying.
 
The assembly adopted the Bylaws for CAS Members and elected the first batch of 14 Foreign Members of CAS. CAS Members in various academic divisions listened to the work report and elected the new leading body of the divisions. The new CAS Presidium was formed, academic activities were held at both the plenary session and division meetings, and the 1993 Tan Kah Kee Awards were presented.
 
Vice Premier Zhu Rongji addressed the plenary session of the meeting to explain the country’s economic situation and work, and State Councilor and State Commissioner of Science and Technology Song Jian made an important speech at the closing ceremony.
