Statement About CCR5 Gene-edited Babiesby the Enforcement of Scientific Ethics Committee, Academic Divisions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CASAD)

Recently, several Chinese and foreign media have reported the birth of two babies with edited CCR5 genes. The Enforcement of Scientific Ethics Committee of the Academic Divisions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASAD) has paid much attention to this matter. As the special committee on responsible for guiding the development of scientific ethics and academic discipline, we make the following statement:

We pay great attention to this matter. Under current circumstances, gene editing in human embryos still involves various unresolved technical issues, might lead to unforeseen risks, and violates the consensus of the international scientific community. Therefore, we firmly oppose any individual or entity performing gene editing on the human germline for clinical applications. We would like to cooperate in joint investigations with relevant departments and regions to elucidate the relevant facts. We also appeal to the relevant investigative institutions to disclose the results of their investigation to the public in a timely manner.
