CAS VP Presents Certificates to New CAS Members in Hong Kong

On May 18, an awarding ceremony for the new Members of CAS in Hong Kong and the Hong Kong CAS Members Forum were held in the Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Center. CAS Vice President LI Jinghai conferred certificates on newly elected CAS Members and CAS Foreign Members in Hong Kong.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Li underlined the rapid development of S&T partnership between Hong Kong and the mainland, including research cooperation, personnel exchanges and joint training programs. For instance, 13 joint research laboratories between CAS and six universities in Hong Kong have been established. In addition, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the CAS Shenzhen Institutes for Advanced Technology have jointly set up the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Integration Technology. At present, 19 outstanding Hong Kong-based scientists have been elected into CAS and there are five Foreign Members of CAS working in this region. While working diligently for the local S&T development, they have also formed close links with universities and research institutes in the mainland, greatly contributing to S&T cooperation between the two sides. As the S&T community in Hong Kong is a very important component of the national innovation system, he stressed, this partnership is of significance for promoting the prosperous development of the two sides, and the drive of building China into an innovative country.

At the Hong Kong CAS Member Forum, Prof. Lap-Chee Tsui, president of Hong Kong University, Prof. Philippe G. Ciarlet from City University of Hong Kong, both being elected Foreign Member of CAS in 2009, and Prof. TANG Benzhong from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, a CAS Member, delivered reports on gene discovery and knowledge industry, assemblage of mathematics from China and the West, and aggregation-induced emission, respectively. It was attended by an audience of nearly 200 from universities, research institutes and high schools. As its fourth session, the forum is aimed at highlighting S&T findings and advocating scientific spirit.
